The brief

A short film with a fixed shooting schedule and an ambitious middle act. The director wanted to know whether the sequence worked before committing a crew to it.

The approach

We boarded tight, cut an animatic with temp sound, and watched it enough times to stop liking it. Three shots were dropped and two were merged.

Board for editing, not for pretty

Fast, legible panels. The point was to see the cut, not to admire the drawings.

Cut an animatic early

Timing exposed a twelve-second sag in the middle that nobody had noticed in the script.

Deliver a shot list that matches

Every panel numbered against the schedule, so the AD could plan the day from the boards.

Selected frames

The result

The sequence shot in three days instead of four. Two setups were cut before anyone paid for them.
